What is an Anxiety Disorder?
Anxiety is the general term that is used to describe several anxiety disorders that can cause nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worrying.
These anxiety disorders affect the individual how they feel and behave, which can manifest into real physical symptoms. These can range from mild (vague and unsettling) to severe (extremely debilitating having serious impacts on daily life).
Most people often experience a general state of worry or fear before confronting the task that is challenging, e.g. an interview, a test, public speaking. Most individuals can easily justify and consider their feelings as normal. However, when the symptoms interfere with the individual’s ability to sleep or function otherwise, anxiety is then considered a problem.
Anxiety is the result that occurs when the individual’s reaction is out of proportion which what might be normally expected in a situation.
The most common classifications of specific anxiety disorders are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Phobias, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Separation Anxiety Disorders. Each of these has its own characteristics and symptoms.
Counselling and/or psychotherapy can help to explore the causes of anxiety and address possible ways to cope with the symptoms and live a rich and meaningful life.
