Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What Is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects an individual’s ability to focus, regulate impulses, manage energy levels, and maintain attention. ADHD is commonly diagnosed in childhood, but many people continue to experience symptoms into adolescence and adulthood.

ADHD presents differently for everyone and is generally classified into three types:

  • Predominantly inattentive – difficulty sustaining attention, forgetfulness, disorganisation
  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive – excessive movement, impulsivity, restlessness
  • Combined type – a combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms
Common Signs of ADHD

While each individual is unique, people with ADHD may experience:

  • Trouble focusing or staying on task
  • Difficulty following instructions or completing tasks
  • Forgetfulness and losing items frequently
  • Impulsivity or acting without thinking
  • Difficulty sitting still or feeling constantly “on the go”
  • Challenges with time management or organisation

These challenges can impact school, work, relationships, and self-esteem if not well supported.

What Causes ADHD?

ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, screen time, or sugar. It has a strong biological basis and often runs in families. Research suggests that ADHD is linked to differences in brain structure and function, with genetic and environmental factors playing a role.

Diagnosis and Assessment

Diagnosing ADHD involves a comprehensive assessment process that includes interviews, behavioural observations, and input from families, schools, or workplaces. A diagnosis can be made in both children and adults, and identifying ADHD can be an important first step in accessing support.

At Soothing Minds, we offer formal ADHD assessments as well as ongoing therapeutic support to help individuals manage symptoms and improve daily functioning.
