Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) or Intellectual Disability (ID)

What Is Intellectual Disability?

Intellectual Developmental Disorder (also known as Intellectual Disability) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a person’s general mental abilities, including reasoning, problem-solving, planning, abstract thinking, judgment, academic learning, and experiential learning. These challenges lead to limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, which impact a person’s ability to live independently and participate fully in daily life.

Intellectual Disability typically originates during the developmental period—usually before the age of 18—and varies in severity from mild to profound.

Common Symptoms and Characteristics

People with an intellectual disability may experience difficulties in the following areas:

1. Intellectual Functioning

  • Challenges with reasoning, planning, judgment, and abstract thinking
  • Difficulty learning new concepts or solving problems
  • Delayed development in academic areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics

2. Adaptive Functioning

  • Difficulty with practical skills such as self-care, hygiene, dressing, or managing money
  • Delays in social skills including communication, understanding social cues, and forming relationships
  • Dependence on others for day-to-day decision-making and safety
Levels of Severity

Intellectual Disability is often described in terms of severity:

  • Mild – May live independently with minimal support; can hold a job and develop social relationships
  • Moderate – Likely to need regular support for work, living, and social engagement
  • Severe or Profound – Require ongoing, high-level support for most aspects of daily life
Causes of Intellectual Disability

There are many potential causes of IDD, including:

  • Genetic conditions (e.g., Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome)
  • Complications during pregnancy or birth (e.g., infections, lack of oxygen)
  • Environmental factors (e.g., exposure to toxins, neglect, or malnutrition)
  • Childhood illnesses or injuries (e.g., head trauma, infections like meningitis)

In many cases, the exact cause may not be known.

Diagnosis and Assessment

Diagnosis is made through:

  • Standardised testing of intellectual and adaptive functioning
  • Clinical history and developmental assessments
  • Input from caregivers, schools, and other professionals

Early diagnosis allows families and support teams to plan appropriate interventions, education, and support services.
