Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a type of anxiety disorder that is characterised by uncontrollable worry that impacts on day-to-day life. While it is not unusual for anyone to occasionally worry about e.g. family, finances, work, health or school, individuals with GAD find themselves experiencing chronic, constant and often unsubstantiated worry. Individuals with GAD may be anxious about just trying to get through an average day because they believe that things will go badly and imagine the worst, handicapping many parts of their lives and thus keeping them from being able to perform everyday tasks.
Physical symptoms of GAD include, but are not limited to the following:
- Muscle tension
- Gastrointestinal discomfort or diarrhoea
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Edginess
- Restlessness or feeling tense
- Sleep difficulties
- Heart races
- Mouth gets dry
If you’re feeling constantly anxious and worried, the safest way to start dealing with this disorder is to talk to a mental health professional.
